The Maverick Gospel

The Gospel of John is truly special for its unique approach among the Gospels. It stands out for its deep theological focus on Jesus as the divine Son of God with its use of metaphors and miracles. John also includes unique, lengthy discourses from Jesus, such as the 'I am' sayings and the High Priestly Prayer, providing deep insights into his relationship with God and his followers. Furthermore, the Gospel's emphasis on the importance of belief for eternal life gives it a message of hope and assurance. For these reasons one of my college professors referred to it as "The Maverick Gospel." I want to share 7 things that make the gospel unique.

  1. Distinctive Writing Style: The Gospel of John has a unique literary style compared to the other Gospels, with more symbolic language and theological depth.

  2. Emphasis on Jesus' Divinity: John focuses more on portraying Jesus as the divine Son of God, emphasizing his pre-existence and his role in creation.

  3. Seven "I Am" Statements: In John, Jesus makes seven profound "I am" statements, such as "I am the bread of life" and "I am the light of the world," revealing different aspects of his identity.

  4. Signs and Miracles: John records specific "signs" performed by Jesus, such as turning water into wine and raising Lazarus from the dead, to demonstrate his power and glory.

  5. Unique Discourses: The Gospel of John contains lengthy discourses by Jesus, including the Farewell Discourse and the High Priestly Prayer, which delve into deep theological truths.

  6. Focus on Belief: John emphasizes the importance of belief in Jesus as the key to eternal life, using the motif of "believing" as a central theme throughout the Gospel.

  7. Emphasis on Love: John highlights the theme of love, with Jesus teaching about the greatest commandment of loving one another and demonstrating selfless love through His actions.

Finally, it's hard to look at this book without considering John 3:16. This passage is beloved because it succinctly but powerfully summarizes the Christian faith. It says, 'For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.' This line captures the depth of God's love and the gift of salvation through Jesus' sacrifice, offering hope and the promise of eternal life to believers. Its simple expression of such profound truths about God's unconditional grace has made it an enduring source of comfort and inspiration, and it's one of the most frequently cited verses in the Bible for its universal message of love and salvation. Even though it doesn’t give a full picture of all the steps of salvation... it is one that gives us hope.

    You are loved.
